The briquette as we know it was developed in the 1950s, the three-segment shape allowing it to be broken up into smaller ‘brickeens’ which were used in peat-fuelled power stations.

While the harvesting of peat on an industrial scale by Bord na Móna only began after the Second World War to meet the growing need for power (including the electrification of rural Ireland), by the time it formally ceased in 2021 it had become firmly part of Irish material culture.
